Obituary of Jimmy D Sexton

Jimmy D. Sexton of Punta Gorda, FL passed away at Bayfront Hospital on July 16, 2021, four days shy of his 80th birthday. He was born in the heart of the beautiful Appalachian Mountains in Appalachia, VA on July 20, 1941 to Troy J. and Sarah (nee Lawson) Sexton, the youngest of three. Jimmy was the first in his family to attend college and earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Virginia’s College in Wise, VA. He graduated in 1976. He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and served during the Cuban Missile Crisis, earning the Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He was also the recipient of Marksman Badges for Rifle and Pistol. During his term, Jimmy suffered a back injury and was honorably discharged, but continued to give of his time and talents to others in need. In 1963, Jimmy moved from North Carolina to Punta Gorda, where he has been a resident ever since. Jimmy was an active member of Disabled American Veterans (DAV), a nonprofit organization of veterans helping veterans in Big Stone Gap, VA and Port Charlotte, FL. He was also a volunteer on the Big Stone Rescue Squad in Big Stone Gap, VA. Jimmy enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing, hunting, and camping. He also enjoyed playing guitar and the banjo. Music and singing were always a big part of his life. Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents, Troy and Sarah; infant son, Jimmy Darrell; stepson, Billy Ray Tuck; sister, Peggy and brother, Lloyd. He is survived and will be forever missed by his beloved wife of 24 years, Delma (nee Mowl) Tuck-Sexton; daughter, Marjorie Sexton; son, Gregory (Shelley) Sexton; stepson, Robert (Juanita) Tuck; stepdaughter, Bobbie “Sis” (Jack) Rostetter; 14 Grandchildren; 14 Great Grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. There will be a Visitation on Friday (TOMORROW), July 23, from 9 AM – 11 AM, with Military Honors and a Chapel Service starting at 11 AM, at Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home, 9400 Indian Spring Cemetery Road, Punta Gorda, FL 33950.
